Representment
Representment is a merchant's formal challenge to a chargeback: evidence such as delivery confirmation, 3-D Secure results and customer correspondence is submitted through the acquirer to the issuing bank to argue that the original charge was valid.
Fighting a chargeback with evidence
Representment is the merchant's rebuttal in the chargeback process - the transaction literally "re-presented" to the issuing bank with evidence that the original charge was valid. The merchant compiles the case, usually through their acquirer or payment provider, and the issuer reviews it against the reason the cardholder gave. If the issuer accepts the evidence, the disputed funds return to the merchant; if not, scheme rules allow further escalation to pre-arbitration and arbitration, though each step adds cost and is rarely worth it for small amounts.
What compelling evidence looks like
The winning evidence depends on the reason code. For a fraud dispute: the 3-D Secure authentication result, device and address data, and a history of undisputed purchases from the same customer. For "goods not received": tracked delivery confirmation to the cardholder's address. For "not as described": the product listing, the customer correspondence, and the refund policy shown at checkout. Deadlines are tight - commonly measured in days to a few weeks from the chargeback date - so evidence must be retrievable on demand, not reconstructed under pressure.
Picking your battles
Representment takes real effort, and win rates vary sharply with reason code and evidence quality. The sound strategy is selective: fight clear friendly fraud where authentication evidence is strong, and concede genuine service failures with a fast refund instead - protecting the customer relationship and the chargeback ratio. LekkaPay supplies transaction-level evidence - 3-D Secure results, authorisation data and timestamps - from its gateway records to support merchants' representment cases.
