M-Pesa

M-Pesa is East Africa's dominant mobile-money wallet, operated by Safaricom and Vodacom group companies, and for tens of millions of people it is the primary way to pay for anything at all. LekkaPay lets merchants accept M-Pesa payments - a capability almost no other payment provider offers. If your customers are in East Africa, this is the rail they actually use.

How it works

How does M-Pesa work with LekkaPay?

  1. Customer chooses M-Pesa at checkout

They enter the mobile number linked to their M-Pesa wallet - no card, no bank details.

  2. A payment prompt appears on their phone

The request shows the amount and merchant, inside the M-Pesa environment they use every day.

  3. They approve with their M-Pesa PIN

The payment is drawn from their wallet balance - money they already hold, so there is no card decline.

  4. LekkaPay confirms the payment in real time

You get an immediate result and can fulfil the order straight away.

Why M-Pesa is a differentiator, not a checkbox

Almost no other payment provider offers M-Pesa acceptance. That is worth saying plainly, because it changes what this page means: for most merchants, M-Pesa is not a method they compare between providers - it is a capability they either have through LekkaPay or do not have at all. If you sell digital goods, services, content or travel into East Africa, M-Pesa support decides whether the majority of that market can pay you in the first place.

How do East African customers actually pay?

In East Africa the wallet came before the card and largely replaced the need for one. M-Pesa - operated by Safaricom and Vodacom group companies, with group reporting counting more than fifty million active customers across Africa - is infrastructure there, the default way to pay for airtime, groceries, school fees and online purchases alike. Card penetration is low and card-not-present declines are punishing, so a card-only checkout aimed at Kenya or Tanzania quietly fails most of its audience. An M-Pesa payment, by contrast, is drawn from a funded wallet the customer tops up and spends from every day.

What does an M-Pesa payment feel like at your checkout?

The customer chooses M-Pesa, enters their mobile number, and a payment prompt appears on their phone showing the amount and your name. They approve it with their M-Pesa PIN and the money moves from their wallet balance - LekkaPay confirms to you in real time. There is no card form, no typing long numbers on your site, and no decline against an empty credit limit, because the customer is spending money they already hold. Refunds travel the same road in reverse, straight back to the wallet.

What M-Pesa opens up for your business

A new geography on your existing integration. M-Pesa sits inside the same LekkaPay account as your cards, wallets and instant EFT - same settlement flow, same reporting, no separate project. That means testing East African demand costs you configuration rather than capital: switch the method on, put it in front of your Kenyan and Tanzanian traffic, and measure what a checkout that speaks the local payment language does to your conversion.

FAQ

M-Pesa questions, answered.

What is M-Pesa?

M-Pesa is a mobile-money wallet operated by Safaricom and Vodacom group companies. Customers hold money directly on their phone - loaded with cash at agents or received from other users - and pay by approving a prompt with their M-Pesa PIN. In East Africa it is the dominant way to pay, used for everything from groceries to school fees.

Customers from which countries can pay with M-Pesa?

M-Pesa operates across several African markets, led by Kenya and Tanzania, under Safaricom and Vodacom group companies. The exact markets available on your LekkaPay account depend on your merchant configuration - talk to us about the countries you sell into and we will confirm coverage.

Why offer M-Pesa?

Because it is how East African customers actually pay. Card penetration in those markets is low and card-not-present declines are high, while M-Pesa wallets are ubiquitous and funded. If you sell into East Africa without M-Pesa, you are asking customers to pay with an instrument most of them do not use - and almost no other payment provider can switch this rail on for you.

How do M-Pesa refunds work?

Refunds are returned to the customer's M-Pesa wallet - the same place the payment came from. The customer sees the money back in the balance they use daily, which keeps refund disputes short and support queries low.

Does M-Pesa need a separate integration?

No. M-Pesa is a payment method within your existing LekkaPay integration, alongside cards, wallets and EFT. Enabling it is configuration on your account, not a new development project.
